For optimum development of water lilies and marsh plants the structure and the composition of the substrate is of great importance. The structure should be sufficiently ‘open’, to guarantee a constant proper circulation of oxygen-rich water in the soil material. The composition should be chosen such that the material contains a sufficient amount of mineral nutrients and trace elements, thus guaranteeing an optimum and constant growth. These two important factors were the key considerations when composing this pond soil.
