Habitat:
- Enclosure Size: Ackie Monitors require a spacious enclosure due to their active nature. A minimum size for an adult is 120x60x60 cm, but larger is preferable to allow for adequate exercise and exploration.
- Substrate: A mixture of sand and soil works well, providing a depth that allows for digging and burrowing, ideally around 30 cm deep.
- Temperature: Maintain a temperature gradient within the enclosure from 26°C (79°F) on the cool side to 32°C (90°F) on the warm side during the day. Basking spots should be hotter, around 50°C (122°F), to mimic their natural environment.
- Humidity: Aim for a humidity level of 20-40%. This can be achieved through regular misting and providing a moist hide.
- Lighting: UVB lighting is crucial for calcium metabolism and overall health. Ensure your Ackie Monitor has access to UVB light for 10-12 hours a day.
Diet:
- Ackie Monitors are carnivorous and thrive on a varied diet of insects (like crickets, roaches, and mealworms), supplemented occasionally with small amounts of vertebrate prey (like pinky mice).
- Dust food with calcium and vitamin D3 supplements a couple of times a week to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
- Provide fresh water in a shallow bowl that is large enough for the monitor to soak in, but ensure it cannot accidentally drown.
Behaviour and Interaction:
- Ackie Monitors are relatively docile and can become accustomed to handling if done gently and regularly. However, always allow them to acclimate to their new environment before trying to handle them.
- Monitor their behaviour for signs of stress or illness, such as lack of appetite, lethargy, or unusual hiding.
