Albino Cardinal Tetra – Paracheirodon axelrodi
The Albino Cardinal Tetra is a pale, eye-catching captive-bred form of the classic Cardinal Tetra, prized for its soft albino body colour, bright red stripe and peaceful shoaling behaviour. Also sold as the Albino Cardinal, Albino Red Neon Tetra or Albino Cardinal Neon, this small South American tetra is best suited to mature planted aquariums with calm tank mates, gentle flow and stable water quality. It makes a beautiful display fish when kept in a proper group, especially against dark substrate and green plants.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Albino Cardinal Tetra
Other Names: Albino Cardinal, Albino Red Neon Tetra, Albino Cardinal Neon, Red Neon Tetra
Scientific Name: Paracheirodon axelrodi
Fish Type: Tetra / Small Characin
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Paracheirodon axelrodi is native to South America, particularly the Rio Negro and Orinoco river systems of Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela. Wild Cardinal Tetras are associated with slow-moving forest streams, tributaries and blackwater habitats where the water is often soft, acidic, shaded and stained with tannins from leaf litter and submerged wood.
The Albino Cardinal Tetra is a captive-bred colour form, so its pale body colour does not occur in the same way as the wild form. Its care should still be based on the natural requirements of Cardinal Tetras, with clean, stable water, subdued lighting, planted cover and peaceful tank mates.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Albino Cardinal Tetras have the same slender body shape as the standard Cardinal Tetra but with reduced dark pigment, giving them a pale cream, pinkish or translucent body tone. The red stripe remains an important feature and usually extends along much of the lower body, while the blue-green iridescent stripe may appear paler or softer than in the wild form.
Adults usually reach around 3–4 cm. Females are often slightly fuller-bodied than males, especially when mature, while males tend to appear slimmer.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is well suited to peaceful planted community aquariums, soft-water displays and blackwater-inspired setups. It is best kept in a mature aquarium with gentle filtration, shaded areas, floating plants and open swimming space.
Albino Cardinal Tetras are not suitable for aggressive communities, very bright bare tanks or newly set-up aquariums with unstable water quality. Because albino fish can look paler under harsh lighting, they show best in a well-planted aquarium with dark décor and subdued light.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 60 litres for a group, with a tank length of at least 60 cm recommended. Larger aquariums are better for bigger shoals and mixed peaceful communities.
Keep in a group of at least 8, with 10 or more preferred where space allows. Larger groups improve confidence, reduce stress and create a stronger shoaling display.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 5.0–7.2
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Additional Notes: Stable water quality is essential. Albino Cardinal Tetras do best in mature aquariums with gentle flow, subdued lighting and clean, low-nitrate water. They can adapt to moderate conditions if acclimated carefully, but avoid hard alkaline extremes, sudden changes and immature tanks.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Albino Cardinal Tetras are peaceful shoaling fish suitable for calm community aquariums. Good tank mates include small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cory-type catfish, Otocinclus, small peaceful gourami, dwarf cichlids in suitable water and other gentle community fish.
Avoid large predators, aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping fish, boisterous barbs and any fish large enough to swallow them. They should not be kept singly or in very small numbers, as this can make them nervous and less colourful.
Feeding:
Albino Cardinal Tetras are small omnivorous micropredators. In nature, Cardinal Tetras feed on tiny invertebrates such as worms, crustaceans and insect larvae. In the aquarium, offer fine flakes, micro pellets and small slow-sinking granules as the staple diet.
Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, baby brineshrimp, mosquito larvae and finely chopped bloodworm. Their mouths are small, so food should be appropriately sized. A varied diet helps maintain colour, condition and shoaling activity.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This is a midwater shoaling fish that looks best in a calm, planted aquarium. A settled group will move together through open swimming areas and plant cover, often forming tighter shoals when startled or during feeding.
Albino Cardinal Tetras are generally peaceful and non-territorial. Breeding is possible but more difficult than with many common tetras, usually requiring very soft, acidic water, dim lighting and careful egg protection, as adults may eat eggs and fry.
Care Notes:
Add Albino Cardinal Tetras only to a mature, fully cycled aquarium. They are sensitive to poor water quality, sudden parameter changes and rough handling, so acclimation should be slow and careful.
Keep them in a proper group, avoid aggressive tank mates and provide subdued lighting with planted cover. Regular water changes, stable temperature and low nitrate levels are important. This species is not recommended for brand-new aquariums.
