Aves Creek Rainbowfish – Melanotaenia boesemani “Aves Creek”
Overview:
The Aves Creek Rainbowfish is a striking locality strain of Boeseman’s Rainbowfish, prized for rich red-orange colouration in mature males and the classic two-tone body pattern that makes Melanotaenia boesemani so recognisable. Compared with many standard Boesemani lines, the Aves Creek form is often described as showing stronger red tones, particularly in well-conditioned adult males. This is a peaceful but very active shoaling fish for a spacious, mature aquarium with clean water, open swimming space and a proper group.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Aves Creek Rainbowfish
Other Names: Aves Creek Boesemani, Red Boesemani Rainbowfish, Boeseman’s Rainbowfish, Bicolour Rainbowfish, Boesemani Rainbowfish
Scientific Name: Melanotaenia boesemani “Aves Creek”
Fish Type: Rainbowfish
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
The Aves Creek form is a locality strain linked with the Lake Ajamaru / Ayamaru drainage region of West Papua, Indonesia. Trade notes describe Aves Creek as a headwater of Lake Ayamaru, while FishBase lists Melanotaenia boesemani from the Ajamaru Lakes region of the Vogelkop Peninsula, with additional occurrence in Lake Aitinjo.
Wild Boesemani Rainbowfish inhabit lakes, tributaries and vegetated freshwater habitats with clear water, open swimming areas and marginal cover. In the aquarium, this translates to a setup with good oxygenation, stable mineral-rich water, plants around the edges and plenty of open midwater swimming room.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Aves Creek Boesemani males develop a bold bicolour pattern, usually with a darker blue, grey-blue or purplish front half and a vivid orange-red to red rear half. This strain is noted in the trade for more intense red colour than many common Boesemani lines, while some descriptions mention a softer gradient between the blue and orange rather than heavy checkering.
Females and young fish are usually slimmer and less intensely coloured, but they are important for natural group behaviour and male display. Adults can reach around 10–15 cm, with males becoming deeper-bodied as they mature. Large specimens should be treated as adult or near-adult rainbowfish with active swimming needs.
Aquarium Suitability:
This is an excellent choice for a larger planted community aquarium, New Guinea rainbowfish display or mixed rainbowfish setup. Aves Creek Rainbowfish need open swimming space, strong filtration and stable water quality. Planting around the sides and back works well, but the centre of the tank should remain open for active group movement.
They are too active for small aquariums and are not ideal with very shy, slow or delicate tank mates that may be unsettled by fast feeding behaviour.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 240 litres for a group, with a tank length of at least 120 cm recommended. Larger aquariums are preferred for large specimens, adult males and mixed rainbowfish groups. General rainbowfish guidance also stresses that most Melanotaenia species need larger aquariums with open swimming space.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 7.0–8.0
Hardness: Moderately hard to hard preferred
Additional Notes: Provide clean, well-filtered and well-oxygenated water with regular partial water changes. Boesemani Rainbowfish come from naturally mineral-rich waters, and specialist references describe their native lakes as hard and alkaline, although captive fish can adapt to a sensible range if conditions are stable.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Aves Creek Rainbowfish are peaceful, active shoaling fish. Suitable tank mates include other rainbowfish, larger tetras, danios, peaceful barbs, robust rasboras, Cory-type catfish that tolerate similar water, bristlenose plecs, peaceful loaches and calm medium-sized cichlids.
Avoid aggressive cichlids, persistent fin-nippers, very tiny fish and slow timid species that may be intimidated at feeding time. Keep in a group of at least 6, with 8 or more preferred. A mixed-sex group is best, as males colour up and display more strongly when females and rival males are present.
Feeding:
Aves Creek Rainbowfish are easy-feeding omnivores. Offer quality flakes, small floating or slow-sinking granules and rainbowfish pellets as the staple diet. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, mosquito larvae and bloodworm. Include vegetable or algae-based foods for balance. They are fast, eager feeders, so use measured portions and make sure quieter tank mates are not outcompeted.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This species spends most of its time in the middle and upper levels, moving in a loose group. Mature males display with raised fins, stronger colour and side-by-side sparring movements, especially in the morning or after water changes. They are lively rather than aggressive, and a well-sized group will usually be more confident and colourful than a small number of fish.
Care Notes:
Keep in a mature aquarium with stable water quality, good oxygenation and a secure lid, as rainbowfish can jump when startled. Do not keep singly or in pairs. Large specimens need proper swimming room from the start. Locality strains such as Aves Creek should not be mixed with other M. boesemani lines if breeding may occur, as this can lose the strain identity. Colour is influenced by age, sex, diet, lighting, group structure and stress level.
