Bleeding Heart Mickey Mouse Platy – Male Xiphophorus maculatus
Overview:
The Male Bleeding Heart Mickey Mouse Platy is a colourful, hardy livebearer with a bright ornamental body pattern and the classic Mickey Mouse-style marking at the tail base. As a selectively bred form of Xiphophorus maculatus, it is peaceful, active and well suited to planted community aquariums with stable, mineral-rich water. Males are usually smaller and slimmer than females, with brighter display behaviour and a gonopodium rather than a fan-shaped anal fin.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Bleeding Heart Mickey Mouse Platy – Male
Other Names: Bleeding Heart Platy, Mickey Mouse Platy, Male Mickey Mouse Platy, Common Platy, Southern Platyfish, Moonfish
Scientific Name: Xiphophorus maculatus
Fish Type: Livebearer / Platy
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Wild Xiphophorus maculatus is native to North and Central America, from eastern Mexico towards Belize. FishBase records the species from warm springs, canals, ditches, creeks and swamps, often with slow water, silt bottoms and weedy banks.
The Bleeding Heart Mickey Mouse form is an aquarium-bred ornamental strain, so it should be treated as a domesticated colour variety rather than a wild-type fish.
Appearance & Adult Size:
This strain usually shows a pale, white, cream, yellow or orange body with red “bleeding heart” colour through the chest, flank or central body, plus the dark Mickey Mouse-style marking near the tail base. Pattern placement varies naturally between individuals, so some males may show stronger red coverage, clearer tail markings or more contrast than others.
Male platies are usually smaller and slimmer than females and are identified by the gonopodium, the modified anal fin used for reproduction. Adult males typically reach around 4–5 cm, while females of the species can grow larger. FishBase lists Xiphophorus maculatus at up to 4 cm TL for males/unsexed fish and 6 cm TL for females.
Aquarium Suitability:
This is an excellent choice for peaceful community aquariums, planted beginner tanks and livebearer displays. Male platies are active, visible fish that appreciate open swimming space, plant cover, floating plants and gentle to moderate filtration. They are generally hardy, but they should still be kept in stable, mature water rather than newly set-up aquariums.
They are not suitable for very soft acidic tanks, aggressive cichlid communities or aquariums with large predatory fish.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 60 litres for a small group, with 90 litres or more preferred for larger groups or mixed community setups. FishBase gives a minimum aquarium size of around 60 cm, which is a good baseline for active platies.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 20–26°C
pH: 7.0–8.2
Hardness: Moderately hard to hard preferred
Additional Notes: Platies do best in mineral-rich, neutral to alkaline water. FishBase lists X. maculatus at pH 7.0–8.0, hardness 9–19 dH and temperature 18–25°C, while Seriously Fish recommends 20–26°C, pH 7.0–8.2 and hardness 10–30 dH. Avoid very soft acidic water, sudden parameter swings and poor water quality.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Male Bleeding Heart Mickey Mouse Platies are peaceful, active community fish. Suitable tank mates include other platies, swordtails, mollies in compatible water, peaceful barbs, danios, small rainbowfish, bristlenose plecs, Cory-type catfish in suitable conditions and other calm community fish that enjoy neutral to alkaline water.
Avoid large predators, aggressive cichlids, persistent fin-nippers and soft-water species that require acidic conditions. Male-only groups can work well for display aquariums and help avoid unwanted fry. If mixed with females, keep one male to two or more females where possible, as males can pester females during courtship; Fishkeeper also recommends several females per male to reduce harassment.
Feeding:
Bleeding Heart Mickey Mouse Platies are easy-feeding omnivores. Offer quality flakes, small granules and livebearer pellets as the staple diet. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, mosquito larvae and bloodworm. Include vegetable matter such as spirulina flakes, algae-based foods or blanched greens. FishBase records wild X. maculatus feeding on worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This is a lively, sociable fish that spends most of its time in the middle and upper levels. Males display to females and may spar mildly with other males, but serious aggression is uncommon when the aquarium is spacious and well arranged. They are not tight shoaling fish, but they do best with others of their own kind or similarly peaceful livebearers.
Care Notes:
Keep in stable, mature water with good mineral content and regular water changes. Provide plants or décor to break up lines of sight, especially when keeping several males. A secure lid is recommended, as platies can jump if startled. If females are present, expect breeding; females give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. Do not mix strains if you want to preserve the Bleeding Heart Mickey Mouse pattern, as platies and related Xiphophorus varieties can interbreed in captivity.
