Bonita Tetra – Moenkhausia bonita
The Bonita Tetra is an unusual, larger-growing South American tetra with active shoaling behaviour and a naturally surface-oriented feeding style. Moenkhausia bonita is less commonly seen than many standard community tetras, making it a good choice for aquarists wanting something distinctive for a mature, spacious planted aquarium. It is generally peaceful, but its adult size and activity mean it should be kept with suitably robust tank mates rather than delicate nano fish.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Bonita Tetra
Other Names: Bonita Moenkhausia, Flagtail Tetra, Blackbird Tetra
Scientific Name: Moenkhausia bonita
Fish Type: Tetra / Characin
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Moenkhausia bonita is known from the upper Rio Miranda system in Brazil, within the Rio Paraguay basin. It was described from Rio Baía Bonita in Mato Grosso do Sul, south-western Brazil.
In nature, the species has been collected in shallow marginal backwaters with low current, usually close to the surface and in schools. Aquarium care should provide open swimming space, stable water quality, shaded areas and a well-planted layout with calmer zones rather than strong constant flow throughout the tank.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Bonita Tetras have a streamlined tetra body suited to active swimming, with a silvery to lightly golden body tone and darker tail or fin markings depending on the individual. As with many Moenkhausia, colour can look subdued in bare shop tanks but improves once the fish are settled in a mature aquarium with good diet and calm surroundings.
Adults can reach around 8 cm or slightly more, making this a larger tetra compared with common Neon, Glowlight or Ember Tetras. Because of this, it should be planned as a medium-sized shoaling fish rather than a small nano tetra.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is best suited to mature community aquariums, larger planted displays and South American-style setups. It needs clean water, open swimming room, plant cover and peaceful but confident tank mates. A darker substrate, wood, floating plants and shaded areas can help the group settle.
Bonita Tetras are not suitable for tiny aquariums, very quiet nano communities, aggressive cichlid tanks, predator aquariums or setups with very small fish that may be intimidated by larger, active tetras.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 120 litres for a group, with a tank length of at least 90 cm recommended. Larger aquariums of 150 litres or more are preferred for bigger shoals and mixed community displays.
Keep in a group of at least 6, with 8–10 or more preferred where space allows. A proper group improves confidence, reduces stress and helps spread natural chasing or display behaviour.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 23–28°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Additional Notes: Keep water clean, stable and well oxygenated. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, pH or hardness. Although precise aquarium data for this species is less widely published than for common tetras, it should be maintained as a warm South American community characin with stable conditions and regular water changes.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Bonita Tetras are best treated as peaceful but active community fish. Suitable tank mates include medium peaceful tetras, larger rasboras, danios, peaceful barbs, rainbowfish, Cory-type catfish, bristlenose plecs, small peaceful cichlids with care and other robust community fish of similar size.
Avoid tiny shy nano fish, very slow long-finned species, large predators and aggressive cichlids. As with many active tetras, they should not be kept singly or in pairs, as group life is important for confidence and natural behaviour.
Feeding:
Bonita Tetras are omnivorous, with wild feeding records showing a strong interest in insects taken from the water surface. Offer quality flakes, small floating or slow-sinking granules and micro pellets as the staple diet. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, mosquito larvae, bloodworm and small floating insect-based foods where available.
Feed a varied diet and include some foods that remain near the surface or midwater, as this species naturally feeds close to the surface. Avoid relying only on foods that sink too quickly past the group.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This species is an active shoaling tetra that will usually use the middle and upper levels of the aquarium. In a settled group, Bonita Tetras may move together through open water, investigate surface foods and use planted edges or shaded areas for security.
Like other tetras, they are egg scatterers and do not provide parental care. If spawning occurs in a community aquarium, eggs and fry are usually eaten unless a separate breeding setup is used.
Care Notes:
Add Bonita Tetras only to a mature, fully cycled aquarium. Provide open swimming space, plant cover and calm shaded areas. Maintain regular water changes and avoid overcrowding, as larger active tetras can add to the bioload and need stable water quality.
Because this is a less commonly offered species, customers should be advised that it grows larger than many small tetras and is best kept in a well-sized group in a medium to larger aquarium.
