CB Mossy New Caledonian Gecko (Mniarogekko chahoua)Habitat:
1. Enclosure: A vertically oriented terrarium is best, as these geckos are arboreal. For an adult, a minimum size of 18”x18”x24” is recommended. The enclosure should have plenty of climbing structures and foliage (real or artificial) for hiding.
2. Temperature: Maintain a temperature gradient with a basking spot around 78-80°F (25-27°C) and a cooler area around 70°F (21°C). Nighttime temperatures can drop slightly but should not go below 65°F (18°C).
3. Humidity: These geckos thrive in high humidity, around 70-80%. Mist the enclosure 1-2 times daily to maintain these levels and provide hydration.
Diet:
1. Primary Diet: Primarily frugivorous. Commercially available Crested Gecko diets, which are fruit-based and come in powder form, are suitable.
2.Supplements : Insects like crickets or roaches can be offered occasionally, dusted with calcium and vitamin D3 supplements.
3. Feeding Schedule: Feed adult geckos 3-4 times a week and juveniles more frequently.
Lighting:
1. UVB Lighting: Not essential if a well-balanced diet is provided, but UVB lighting can be beneficial for overall health and behaviour.
2. Day/Night Cycle: Maintain a natural light cycle with 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.
Water:
1. Water Source: While they primarily drink water droplets from plants and enclosure walls, a shallow water dish should also be provided.
2. Misting: Regular misting is crucial for maintaining humidity and providing drinking water.
Social and Behavioural Needs:
1. Social Structure: Mossy Geckos are solitary and should be housed alone to avoid stress and potential aggression.
2. Environmental Enrichment: Provide plenty of branches, vines, and hiding places to simulate their natural environment.
Health:
1. Regular Check-Ups: Annual health check-ups with a veterinarian experienced in reptiles are recommended.
2. Signs of Illness: Be alert for changes in behavior, appetite, or appearance, which could indicate illness.
