Goyder River Rainbowfish – Melanotaenia trifasciata “Goyder River”
Overview:
The Goyder River Rainbowfish is one of the most colourful and sought-after locality forms of the Banded Rainbowfish, admired for its strong body stripe, active shoaling behaviour and vivid mature male colour. This Australian strain of Melanotaenia trifasciata can develop intense red, orange, yellow, blue and metallic tones, especially in settled males kept with females and rival males. It is peaceful, hardy and impressive in the right aquarium, but it is also a fast, energetic fish that needs a long tank, clean water and a proper group.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Goyder River Rainbowfish
Other Names: Goyder River Banded Rainbowfish, Three Stripe Rainbowfish, Banded Rainbowfish, Jewel Rainbowfish, Three-striped Sunfish
Scientific Name: Melanotaenia trifasciata “Goyder River”
Fish Type: Rainbowfish
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
The Goyder River form is associated with the Goyder River system in the Northern Territory, Australia. The wider species, Melanotaenia trifasciata, occurs across northern Australia, where it lives mainly in small streams, creeks and waterholes. FishBase describes the species from clear to moderately turbid water, often over rocky or gravel bottoms, around aquatic vegetation, submerged logs and branches.
ANGFA locality records include M. trifasciata from the Goyder River, including rocky mid-reach and headwater habitats, which supports the need for clean, well-oxygenated water and open swimming space in aquarium care.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Goyder River Rainbowfish have a deepening, laterally compressed body with the dark midlateral stripe typical of M. trifasciata. Mature males are the most colourful, often showing a blue to bluish body stripe with bright red, orange or yellow colour through the fins and rear body. Females and young fish are usually slimmer and less intense, but they are important for natural group behaviour and male display.
Adults commonly reach around 10–12 cm, with some males becoming deeper-bodied and more impressive as they mature. FishBase lists Melanotaenia trifasciata at up to around 12 cm standard length.
Aquarium Suitability:
This is an excellent fish for a larger planted community aquarium, Australian-style display or mixed rainbowfish setup. Goyder River Rainbowfish need open midwater swimming room, good filtration and stable water quality. Planting around the sides and back works well, but the centre of the tank should remain open for active group movement.
They are peaceful, but they are too active for tiny aquariums, shy nano fish or very slow feeders that may be unsettled at feeding time.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 240 litres for a group, with a tank length of at least 120 cm recommended. Larger aquariums are preferred for mature males, larger shoals or mixed rainbowfish groups. Seriously Fish recommends keeping M. trifasciata in groups of at least 6–8, preferably more, and notes that this species does best with space for active shoaling.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 22–28°C
pH: 6.5–7.8
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard; adaptable if stable
Additional Notes: Provide clean, well-oxygenated water with regular partial water changes and gentle to moderate flow. FishBase gives a broad natural range of 22–30°C and pH 5.2–7.0 for M. trifasciata, but captive-bred locality strains usually adapt well to stable aquarium conditions.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Goyder River Rainbowfish are peaceful but fast and confident. Suitable tank mates include other rainbowfish, larger tetras, danios, peaceful barbs, robust rasboras, Cory-type catfish, bristlenose plecs, peaceful loaches and calm medium-sized cichlids that enjoy similar water conditions.
Avoid aggressive cichlids, persistent fin-nippers, very tiny fish and slow, delicate species that may be intimidated by their activity. Keep in a group of at least 6, with 8 or more strongly preferred. A mixed-sex group gives the best colour, as males display more strongly when females and rival males are present.
Feeding:
Goyder River Rainbowfish are easy-feeding omnivores. Offer quality flakes, small floating or slow-sinking granules and rainbowfish pellets as the staple diet. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, mosquito larvae and bloodworm. Include some vegetable or algae-based foods for balance. They are quick feeders, so use measured portions and check that quieter tank mates are not outcompeted.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This species spends most of its time in the middle and upper levels, moving in a loose group through open water. Mature males display with raised fins, intensified colour and short side-by-side sparring movements, especially in the morning, after water changes or when females are nearby. They are active rather than aggressive, and a well-sized group will usually show far better colour and confidence than a small number of fish.
Care Notes:
Keep in a mature aquarium with stable water quality, good oxygenation and a secure lid, as rainbowfish can jump when startled. Do not keep singly or in pairs. Locality strains such as Goyder River should not be mixed with other Melanotaenia trifasciata localities if breeding may occur, as this can lose the identity of the strain. Young fish may look modest at first, but males improve greatly with age, diet, space and correct group structure.
