Koi Golden Barb – Barbodes semifasciolatus
The Koi Golden Barb is a bright, active and hardy captive-bred barb variety with warm golden colour and attractive koi-style markings. Also sold as the Gold Barb, Golden Barb, Chinese Barb, Schuberti Barb or Koi Barb, this lively shoaling fish is well suited to planted community aquariums with plenty of swimming space. It is peaceful when kept in a proper group, easy to feed and a strong choice for aquarists wanting colour and movement without choosing a large or aggressive species.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Koi Golden Barb
Other Names: Gold Barb, Golden Barb, Chinese Barb, Schuberti Barb, Koi Barb
Scientific Name: Barbodes semifasciolatus
Older / Trade Name: Puntius semifasciolatus, Barbus semifasciolatus, Schuberti Barb
Strain / Form: Captive-bred Koi Golden ornamental strain
Fish Type: Barb / Shoaling Cyprinid
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Barbodes semifasciolatus is native to East and Southeast Asia, where wild-type fish occur in freshwater streams, rivers, ponds, ditches and slower vegetated margins. Natural habitats may include areas with plants, submerged roots, leaf litter, open swimming space and gentle to moderate flow.
The Koi Golden Barb is a captive-bred colour form rather than a wild locality form. The wild fish is usually greener or yellowish with darker bars, while the golden and koi-patterned varieties have been developed through selective breeding for aquarium use.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Koi Golden Barbs have a compact, streamlined barb shape with a golden, yellow or orange base colour. The koi form may show irregular orange, red, black, bronze or darker markings across the body and fins, with pattern intensity varying between individuals.
Adults usually reach around 6–8 cm, although well-grown fish may become slightly larger. Females are typically fuller-bodied, while males are often slimmer and may show stronger colour, especially when in breeding condition.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is well suited to planted community aquariums, active shoaling displays and peaceful temperate-to-tropical setups. It appreciates open swimming room, plants around the sides and back, and some cover from wood, rocks or dense planting.
Koi Golden Barbs are much better behaved when kept in a proper group. In low numbers, barbs can become nervous or may direct too much attention towards tank mates, so group size is important.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 90–120 litres for a group, with a tank length of at least 80–90 cm recommended. Larger aquariums are better for bigger groups and mixed community setups.
Keep in a group of at least 6, with 8 or more preferred where space allows. A good group improves confidence, spreads social behaviour and encourages more natural activity.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 18–25°C
pH: 6.0–7.8
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Additional Notes: Koi Golden Barbs are adaptable but do best in clean, stable, well-oxygenated water. They can be kept in cooler tropical or temperate-style aquariums, but avoid extreme heat, poor water quality and sudden parameter swings.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Koi Golden Barbs are generally peaceful, active community fish when kept in a suitable group. Suitable tank mates include danios, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, peaceful barbs, medium rasboras, larger tetras, Corydoras-type catfish, Bristlenose Plecos, hillstream loaches in cooler setups and peaceful livebearers in suitable water.
Avoid very slow long-finned fish, tiny shy species, large predators, aggressive cichlids and delicate fish that may be stressed by their activity. They are not usually serious fin-nippers, but any active barb can become troublesome if kept in cramped conditions or too small a group.
Feeding:
Koi Golden Barbs are omnivorous foragers. In nature, the species feeds on algae, diatoms, detritus, small insects, worms, crustaceans and other tiny aquatic foods. In the aquarium, offer quality flakes, small pellets and granules as the staple diet.
Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, mosquito larvae and bloodworm. Vegetable and algae-based foods, including spirulina flakes, algae wafers and blanched greens, are useful for colour, digestion and long-term condition.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This is an active midwater fish that moves in loose groups through open areas and planted cover. Settled fish are bold at feeding time and will often explore all parts of the aquarium.
Males may display to females and rival males, especially in a mature group. Breeding may occur in planted aquariums, with eggs scattered among fine plants or spawning mops. Adults may eat eggs and fry, so separate breeding arrangements are needed if you want to raise young.
Care Notes:
Keep Koi Golden Barbs in a proper group and provide enough swimming space. They are hardy when kept correctly, but they still need stable water, regular maintenance and suitable tank mates.
Avoid cramped aquariums, poor water quality and very warm low-oxygen conditions. A planted tank with open swimming space and a darker background will help show the gold and koi patterning well. Use a secure lid, as active barbs can jump if startled.
