Mamberamo River Rainbowfish – Glossolepis multisquamata
The Mamberamo River Rainbowfish is a large, active New Guinea rainbowfish with a deep-bodied shape, strong swimming behaviour and impressive adult colour. Also known as the Sepik Rainbowfish, Mamberamo Rainbowfish or Multisquamata Rainbowfish, this species is best suited to spacious planted aquariums where a group can swim freely and mature males can develop their best display colours. It is a striking choice for aquarists wanting a substantial rainbowfish for a larger peaceful community or specialist New Guinea-style setup.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Mamberamo River Rainbowfish
Other Names: Sepik Rainbowfish, Mamberamo Rainbowfish, Multisquamata Rainbowfish
Scientific Name: Glossolepis multisquamata
Fish Type: Rainbowfish
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Glossolepis multisquamata is native to northern New Guinea, where it is associated with large river floodplain systems, including the Mamberamo and Sepik drainages. Unlike many rainbowfish that favour clear upland streams, this species is linked with slower floodplain habitats such as swampy lagoons, lakes, backwaters and small side channels of major rivers.
These habitats usually provide open swimming areas along with vegetated margins, submerged branches and calmer zones where the fish can feed near the surface and in midwater. In the aquarium, it should be given both open space and planted cover rather than being kept in a cramped or bare tank.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Mamberamo River Rainbowfish have a robust, laterally compressed body with a deeper adult shape than many smaller rainbowfish. Colour can vary with sex, age, mood and locality, but settled adults may show silver, bronze, olive, greenish, orange or reddish tones.
Mature males are usually deeper-bodied and more colourful, especially when displaying to females or rival males. Females are generally slimmer and more modestly coloured. Adults commonly reach around 10–12 cm, with mature males becoming quite chunky in good conditions.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is best suited to a large, mature tropical aquarium with open swimming space, planted margins and clean, well-oxygenated water. It works well in a spacious rainbowfish community, a New Guinea-style display or a larger peaceful community aquarium with suitably sized tank mates.
Because it is active, fast-feeding and relatively large, it is not suitable for small tanks, shy nano fish or delicate slow feeders. It looks best in a proper group, where males can display naturally and the fish feel secure.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 250 litres for a group, with a tank length of at least 120 cm recommended. Larger aquariums are preferable for long-term adult care, mixed rainbowfish communities or groups containing several mature males.
Keep in a group of at least 6, with 8 or more preferred where space allows. A mixed group with more females than males can help reduce persistent courtship pressure.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 6.8–7.8
Hardness: Moderately soft to moderately hard
Additional Notes: Provide stable, clean water with good oxygenation and regular water changes. Moderate water movement is useful, but the aquarium should still include calmer planted areas. Avoid cramped tanks, poor filtration and sudden changes in water quality.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Mamberamo River Rainbowfish are peaceful but very active. Suitable tank mates include other medium to large peaceful rainbowfish, larger tetras, peaceful barbs, robust cory-type catfish, Bristlenose Plecos, peaceful loaches and calm medium-sized community fish that will not be intimidated by their speed.
Avoid very small fish that may be stressed by constant activity, shy slow feeders, fin-nipping species, aggressive cichlids and large predatory fish. They should not be kept singly or in pairs, as low numbers can lead to nervous behaviour and poor colour development.
Feeding:
Mamberamo River Rainbowfish are omnivorous micropredators that naturally feed on small invertebrates taken from midwater and the surface. In the aquarium, offer quality flakes, floating or slow-sinking pellets and small granules as the staple diet.
Supplement regularly with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, brineshrimp, mosquito larvae and bloodworm. A varied diet helps maintain body condition, colour and breeding behaviour. They are quick feeders, so make sure quieter tank mates also receive food.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This is an active midwater to upper-level rainbowfish that spends much of its time swimming in open areas. Mature males may intensify in colour, raise their fins and display to females or rival males, especially in the morning or after water changes.
They appreciate open swimming lanes along the front or centre of the aquarium, with plants, wood or taller décor around the sides and back for security. Like many rainbowfish, they may scatter eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, although adults may eat eggs and fry.
Care Notes:
Plan for the adult size and activity level. This species needs a long aquarium, stable water quality and a proper group. Do not keep singly, in pairs or in small cramped aquariums.
Regular water changes are important, as rainbowfish often lose colour and condition in neglected tanks. Provide a varied diet, avoid aggressive tank mates and use a secure lid, as active rainbowfish can jump when startled.
