Marble Ghost Knife Fish – Apteronotus albifrons

The Marble Ghost Knife Fish is a striking freshwater knifefish with a long ribbon-like body, flowing underside fin and unusual marbled patterning. This aquarium trade form of the Black Ghost Knifefish is an intelligent, nocturnal predator best suited to large mature aquariums with subdued lighting, excellent filtration and peaceful tank mates too large to be eaten. It is a fascinating specialist species, but it grows large and should not be bought for small community aquariums.

Natural Range & Habitat:

Apteronotus albifrons is native to tropical South America, where it occurs in river systems, streams, flooded areas and habitats with submerged roots, branches, leaf litter and shaded cover. It is adapted to low-light environments and uses weak electrical signals to navigate and locate food.

The Marble Ghost Knife Fish is an aquarium trade variation of this species. In the aquarium, it should be provided with a mature, spacious setup containing driftwood, smooth caves, shaded areas and open swimming space. Secure hiding places are especially important, as this fish can become stressed without daytime cover.

Appearance & Adult Size:

Marble Ghost Knife Fish have the distinctive knifefish body shape, with a long laterally compressed body and a continuous rippling anal fin used for smooth forward and backward movement. The marble form may show black, smoky, grey, white or pale mottled patterning depending on the individual fish.

Adults can reach around 40–50 cm, making this a large freshwater species. Juveniles are often sold much smaller, but they must be planned for as adult fish with a high space requirement and a predatory mouth.

Aquarium Suitability:

This species is best suited to large mature aquariums, specialist community setups and peaceful predator displays. It is not suitable for nano tanks, small community aquariums or tanks with tiny fish.

Marble Ghost Knife Fish are generally peaceful towards fish they cannot swallow, but they are predatory and may eat small tetras, rasboras, fry, shrimp and other small tank mates. They also dislike unstable water conditions, bright exposed aquariums and aggressive fish that may harass them.

Recommended Aquarium Size:

A practical minimum is 450 litres for a single adult, with a tank length of at least 150 cm strongly recommended. Larger aquariums are preferred for long-term adult care.

Keep singly in most home aquariums. Multiple ghost knifefish may become territorial or stressed unless the aquarium is extremely large and carefully arranged with separate hiding areas.

Additional Notes: Stable, clean, well-oxygenated water is essential. Provide strong filtration without excessive direct current, and maintain regular water changes. Avoid immature aquariums, sudden parameter swings, poor water quality, sharp décor and bright uncovered layouts with no hiding spaces.

Marble Ghost Knife Fish are usually peaceful but predatory. They should be kept with calm, robust fish too large to be swallowed and not aggressive enough to bully them.

Suitable tank mates may include larger peaceful cichlids, medium to large rainbowfish, larger peaceful barbs, silver dollars, larger tetras, robust catfish and other calm species of suitable size. Avoid neon-sized fish, small rasboras, guppies, shrimp, very small corydoras, fin-nippers, aggressive cichlids, territorial bottom dwellers and any fish likely to harass the knifefish in its hiding area.

Feeding:

Marble Ghost Knife Fish are carnivorous predators. Offer a varied diet of frozen and live-style foods such as bloodworm, blackworm, river shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, chopped prawn, mussel, cockle and earthworm.

Many individuals can be trained onto sinking carnivore pellets, but frozen and meaty foods are often needed during settling. Feed after lights dim if the fish is shy. Avoid feeder fish, as they can introduce disease and are not a balanced long-term diet.

Behaviour in the Aquarium:

This is a nocturnal to crepuscular fish that is often most active in the evening, at night or under subdued lighting. It may spend the day resting inside caves, pipes, driftwood gaps or shaded areas, emerging to feed and explore once comfortable.

Ghost knifefish swim using a rippling underside fin, allowing them to move forwards, backwards and hover with excellent control. They use weak electric signals for navigation and communication, so they should not be crowded with other electric fish in normal home aquariums.

Care Notes:

Provide smooth hiding tubes, caves or driftwood shelters large enough for the fish to enter without scraping its body. Avoid sharp rocks and abrasive décor, as the skin can be damaged.

Plan for adult size before purchase. This species is often sold small but becomes a large, long-lived predator requiring excellent filtration and space. Keep the aquarium covered, maintain stable water quality and avoid sudden changes. Observe feeding closely, as shy juveniles may need target feeding after lights out.
