Marbled Kissing Gourami – Helostoma temminckii
The Marbled Kissing Gourami, Helostoma temminckii, is a large and unusual labyrinth fish best known for its thick lips, grazing behaviour and “kissing” displays. This marbled form adds a mottled, patterned appearance to the classic Kissing Gourami look, making it a striking choice for spacious tropical aquariums. Although often sold as a juvenile, this is not a small community gourami; it grows into a robust, long-lived fish that needs generous swimming space, strong filtration and carefully chosen tank mates.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Marbled Kissing Gourami
Other Names: Kissing Gourami, Kissing Fish, Kisser Gourami, Kissing Gouramy, Marbled Kisser
Scientific Name: Helostoma temminckii
Fish Type: Gourami / Labyrinth Fish
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Helostoma temminckii is native to Southeast Asia, with a natural range including areas such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and nearby river systems. Wild Kissing Gouramis are usually associated with slow-moving rivers, lakes, floodplain waters, marshes and heavily vegetated habitats. The marbled fish offered in the aquarium trade is a captive-bred colour form; its care should still be based on the requirements of the wild species, which is adapted to warm, plant-rich freshwater environments and can breathe atmospheric air using its labyrinth organ.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Marbled Kissing Gouramis have a deep, laterally compressed body, large eyes and the distinctive fleshy lips that give the species its common name. The marbled strain usually shows a pale to pinkish, cream or silver base colour with irregular darker mottling across the body and fins, though pattern strength varies between individuals. Juveniles are often sold at a small size, but adults can reach around 20–30 cm in good conditions, with a heavy-bodied build as they mature. Sexing is difficult outside of breeding condition, although mature females may appear fuller-bodied.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is best suited to a large tropical freshwater aquarium with open swimming room, sturdy planting, smooth décor and excellent filtration. It can work in a spacious community of medium to large, robust fish, but it is not suitable for tiny tank mates or delicate long-finned species. Kissing Gouramis may browse soft plants and can become pushy as they mature, so they are better treated as a large semi-aggressive community fish rather than a peaceful small gourami.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum aquarium size is around 300 litres for a single adult, with a tank length of at least 120–150 cm strongly recommended. Larger aquariums are preferable for long-term care, pairs, groups or mixed communities with other sizeable fish.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 22–28°C
pH: 6.0–8.0
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Additional Notes: This is a labyrinth fish and must always have access to the water surface for air breathing. Provide stable water quality, good filtration and regular maintenance. Avoid very small aquariums, unstable new tanks and overcrowded setups.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Semi-Aggressive
Marbled Kissing Gouramis can be territorial, assertive and occasionally rough with other fish, especially as they grow. The “kissing” behaviour is often a display or contest rather than affection. Suitable tank mates include peaceful to moderately robust fish of similar size, such as larger barbs, medium-sized catfish, rainbowfish, silver dollars, larger loaches and suitably sized peaceful cichlids. Avoid tiny fish that may be bullied or swallowed, delicate slow-moving species, very long-finned tank mates and aggressive predators that may injure the gourami. More than one Kissing Gourami should only be kept in a suitably large aquarium with enough space to reduce constant chasing.
Feeding:
Kissing Gouramis are omnivores with a strong grazing habit. Offer a varied diet including quality flakes, medium floating or sinking pellets, algae wafers, spirulina foods and vegetable-based preparations. They also benefit from blanched courgette, shelled peas, lettuce or spinach, along with frozen foods such as brineshrimp, bloodworm, daphnia and mysis. They may graze algae and biofilm, but should not be relied upon as an algae-control fish. Remove uneaten vegetable matter before it pollutes the water.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This species is active through the middle and upper areas of the aquarium, while also grazing surfaces, plants and décor with its specialised lips. It may rasp at algae, browse soft plant growth and investigate tank mates. Mature fish can become confident and dominant, particularly in smaller aquariums. Occasional trips to the surface to gulp air are normal. During displays, two fish may press their mouths together in the well-known “kissing” posture.
Care Notes:
Plan for the adult size, not the small juvenile size seen in shops. Provide a large aquarium, strong filtration and a secure lid with access to warm air above the water. Choose tank mates carefully and monitor for bullying or slime-coat rasping. Soft-leaved plants may be eaten, so use tough plants such as Java fern, Anubias or robust artificial alternatives if needed. This species is not suitable for nano tanks, small peaceful community aquariums or brand-new setups.
