Odessa Barb – Pethia padamya
The Odessa Barb is a colourful, active shoaling barb best known for the vivid ruby-red stripe shown by mature males. Correctly listed as Pethia padamya, this lively species is peaceful enough for suitable community aquariums, but it is fast-moving and should be kept in a proper group with plenty of swimming space. It is an excellent choice for planted aquariums where its red, silver and black markings can stand out against green foliage.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Odessa Barb
Other Names: Ruby Barb, Scarlet Barb, Odessa Ruby Barb, Red Odessa Barb
Scientific Name: Pethia padamya
Older / Trade Name: Puntius padamya
Fish Type: Barb / Cyprinid
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Pethia padamya is native to Myanmar, where wild populations are associated with central Myanmar waters including areas around the Anisakan Falls region and the lower Chindwin River system. Its natural habitats include clear, well-oxygenated waters with open swimming space, submerged structure and seasonal variation.
In the aquarium, Odessa Barbs do best in mature planted setups with open swimming room, gentle to moderate flow, shaded areas and clean water. Plants around the sides and back, darker substrate and wood or smooth stones help create a more natural display while leaving enough space for active group movement.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Odessa Barbs have a streamlined barb body with a silver, olive or lightly golden base colour. Mature males are especially striking, showing a bright red to ruby lateral stripe running along the body, dark scale edging and black markings near the shoulder and caudal peduncle. Females are usually fuller-bodied and less intensely coloured, often showing softer silver, yellow or bronze tones.
Adults usually reach around 5–6 cm. Colour is strongest in settled males kept in a good-sized group, with clean water, good diet and some female competition to encourage display behaviour.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is well suited to planted community aquariums, active Asian-style displays and mixed shoals with similarly robust peaceful fish. It is hardier than many delicate tetras and can make a bright, energetic centrepiece shoal in a medium-sized aquarium.
Odessa Barbs are not suitable for tiny nano tanks, very slow delicate communities, predator aquariums, aggressive cichlid tanks or cramped aquariums with little open swimming space.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 90 litres for a group, with a tank length of at least 75–90 cm recommended. Larger aquariums of 120 litres or more are preferred for bigger shoals and mixed communities.
Keep in a group of at least 6, with 8–10 or more preferred. Larger groups reduce stress, improve colour and help spread any natural chasing or display behaviour.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 20–26°C
pH: 6.5–7.8
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Additional Notes: Odessa Barbs are adaptable but should be kept in clean, stable, well-oxygenated water. They do not need very high tropical temperatures and are best avoided in very warm discus-style aquariums. Regular partial water changes help maintain colour, activity and long-term condition.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Odessa Barbs are generally peaceful community fish when kept in a proper group, though they are active and may be too lively for very shy or slow-moving species. Suitable tank mates include danios, rasboras, peaceful barbs, medium tetras, rainbowfish, Cory-type catfish, bristlenose plecs, peaceful loaches and other robust community fish that enjoy similar conditions.
Avoid long-finned delicate fish, tiny nano species, large predators, aggressive cichlids and slow feeders that may be outcompeted. Keeping them in too small a group can make chasing more noticeable, so group size is important.
Feeding:
Odessa Barbs are easy-feeding omnivores. Offer quality flakes, small granules and micro pellets as the staple diet. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, brineshrimp, bloodworm, mosquito larvae and small insect-based foods.
Include some vegetable or algae-based foods for balance. A varied diet helps maintain the male’s red colour, strong body condition and active display behaviour.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This species swims mainly through the middle levels of the aquarium, often moving quickly through open water and planted edges. Males may display to females and rival males by intensifying colour, spreading fins and making short chases.
Odessa Barbs are egg scatterers and do not provide parental care. If spawning occurs in a community aquarium, eggs and fry are usually eaten unless a separate breeding setup is used.
Care Notes:
Add Odessa Barbs only to a mature, fully cycled aquarium. Provide open swimming room, plant cover, stable water quality and a secure lid, as active barbs can jump when startled. Avoid bright bare tanks, overcrowding and keeping the species in very small groups.
Males may appear less colourful after transport or in shop tanks, but settled fish usually develop a stronger ruby stripe once comfortable, well fed and housed with other Odessa Barbs.
