Orange Sailfin Molly – Poecilia latipinna
Overview:
The Orange Sailfin Molly is a bright, active livebearer with warm orange colour and the potential for an impressive sail-like dorsal fin in mature males. As a colour strain of Poecilia latipinna, it is best suited to aquariums with hard, alkaline water, good filtration and plenty of swimming space. This is a peaceful community fish when kept with compatible hard-water species, but it is not a soft-water fish and should not be placed in acidic or unstable aquariums.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Orange Sailfin Molly
Other Names: Orange Molly, Orange Sailfin, Gold Orange Sailfin Molly, Fancy Sailfin Molly, Sailfin Molly
Scientific Name: Poecilia latipinna
Fish Type: Livebearer / Molly
Water Type: Freshwater; tolerant of slightly brackish conditions
Natural Range & Habitat:
Wild Poecilia latipinna is native to the Atlantic and Gulf coastal drainages of North America, from the Cape Fear drainage in North Carolina southwards to Veracruz, Mexico. In nature, it occurs in warm, still or gently flowing habitats including small creeks, drains, ponds, lakes, vegetated backwaters, tidal ditches and brackish canals.
The Orange Sailfin Molly is a domesticated aquarium strain, so its colour is captive-bred rather than wild-type. Its care should still reflect the natural species’ preference for warm, mineral-rich water, plant growth, algae grazing and open swimming areas.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Orange Sailfin Mollies usually show bright orange, golden-orange or tangerine body colour. Mature males may develop the tall dorsal fin that gives Sailfin Mollies their name, using it during display towards females and rival males. Females are larger and fuller-bodied, while males are slimmer and have a gonopodium.
Adults commonly reach 8–12 cm in aquariums, with well-grown Sailfin-type fish capable of becoming larger. FishBase lists Poecilia latipinna at up to 15 cm total length for males or unsexed fish and 10 cm total length for females, so a spacious aquarium is strongly recommended.
Aquarium Suitability:
This strain is suitable for peaceful hard-water community aquariums, livebearer displays and planted tanks with stable water chemistry. Orange Sailfin Mollies appreciate open swimming space, areas of plant cover, gentle to moderate flow and strong filtration. They are especially useful in aquariums where harder tap water makes soft-water fish unsuitable.
They are not suitable for very soft acidic aquariums, small nano tanks, aggressive cichlid setups, fin-nipping communities or neglected tanks with poor water quality.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 120 litres for a small group, with 150 litres or more preferred for mature males, mixed-sex groups or community aquariums. A tank length of at least 90 cm is recommended, as Sailfin Molly males need room to display and females need space away from persistent attention.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 7.2–8.5
Hardness: Hard to very hard preferred
Additional Notes: Mollies should be kept in mineral-rich, alkaline water. Seriously Fish notes that P. latipinna should be maintained in moderately hard or harder water with a basic pH, as it weakens quickly in soft or acidic conditions. Fishkeeper also notes that Sailfin Mollies need high KH or salt addition to thrive, although salt is not essential in a properly mineralised freshwater aquarium.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Orange Sailfin Mollies are peaceful but active livebearers. Suitable tank mates include platies, swordtails, other mollies, peaceful rainbowfish, larger danios, peaceful barbs, bristlenose plecs and other community fish that enjoy hard, neutral to alkaline water.
Avoid soft-water fish that need acidic conditions, large predators, aggressive cichlids, persistent fin-nippers and very tiny fish or shrimp that may be harassed or outcompeted. Keep in groups, ideally with one male to two or more females if mixed sexes are kept, as males can chase females. Male-only groups can also work in spacious display aquariums.
Feeding:
Orange Sailfin Mollies are omnivores with a strong need for algae and plant-based foods. Offer quality livebearer flakes, spirulina flakes, algae wafers and small granules as the staple diet. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, mosquito larvae and occasional bloodworm. FishBase records wild P. latipinna feeding mainly on algae, with additional rotifers, small crustaceans and aquatic insects.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This is an active upper and midwater fish that spends much of the day grazing, cruising and interacting with other livebearers. Males may flare the dorsal fin and display to females or rival males. Females give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs, and young may survive in planted aquariums if there is enough fine cover.
Care Notes:
Keep Orange Sailfin Mollies in mature, stable water with good mineral content, strong filtration and regular water changes. Do not keep them in soft acidic water. Provide vegetable matter in the diet, avoid overcrowding and use plants or décor to break up lines of sight if males are persistent. A secure lid is recommended, as active livebearers can jump. If breeding is not wanted, keep males only or plan ahead for fry.
