Product Details
A 10-gallon tank is suitable for a single Panther Gecko, but if you plan to keep more, a 20-gallon tank is necessary. Ensure the enclosure has a secure lid to prevent escape. The tank should include several small hides and a shallow water dish but doesn't require a food dish since you'll feed your gecko live insects. Climbing branches can be added, but ensure they're securely placed to prevent injury from falls.
Lighting and Heat
Panther Geckos don't usually require UVB lighting unless you notice changes in their behavior, such as lethargy. They should have access to light for 10 to 12 hours a day. The basking area should be around 85°F, and the overall temperature should not drop below 70°F at night. A basic heat light that emits white light during the day and red, blue, or purple light at night is suitable.
Humidity and Substrate
Maintain the tank's humidity between 60% to 70%, potentially reaching 100% overnight. This can be managed with a water dish and regular misting. For the substrate, options like jungle dirt mix, bark chips, or reptile carpeting work well. Natural materials help maintain humidity and offer a more naturalistic environment.
Feeding
Their diet should primarily consist of insects, with crickets being a favorite. Young geckos need to eat daily, while adults can be fed every other day. The size of the insects should not be larger than the distance between the gecko's eyes. Always ensure fresh water is available in their dish.
Health and Hygiene
Regular maintenance is crucial for your Panther Gecko's health:
- Change the water daily.
- Disinfect the water dish weekly.
- Spot clean the substrate daily and replace it monthly.
- Clean enclosure walls and décor regularly to prevent bacterial growth.
Panther Geckos are relatively easy to care for and make a great choice for first-time lizard owners due to their interesting personality and manageable care requirements. They may be timid and prone to stress if handled improperly, so it's best to limit handling to necessary instances only.
