Petricola Catfish – Synodontis petricola
The Petricola Catfish is a compact, beautifully spotted African catfish from Lake Tanganyika, valued for its active behaviour, bold patterning and suitability for rocky hard-water aquariums. Synodontis petricola is peaceful for a Synodontis, but it is still a confident nocturnal-to-crepuscular catfish that needs hiding places, excellent filtration and suitably sized tank mates. It is best kept in groups where its natural social behaviour can be seen.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Petricola Catfish
Other Names: Dwarf Lake Synodontis, Dwarf Cuckoo Catfish, Petricola Synodontis, False Cuckoo Catfish
Scientific Name: Synodontis petricola
Similar Trade Species: Synodontis lucipinnis
Fish Type: African Catfish / Mochokid Catfish
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Synodontis petricola is native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. In the wild, it is associated with rocky lake habitats, where it can shelter among stones, caves and crevices while foraging over hard surfaces and the lake bed.
In the aquarium, Petricola Catfish should be kept in a mature hard-water setup with plenty of rockwork, caves, shaded retreats and open areas for feeding. Clean, oxygen-rich water and strong biological filtration are important, especially in Tanganyikan-style aquariums where stable alkaline conditions are expected.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Petricola Catfish have a pale beige, cream or grey-brown body covered in dark rounded spots. The fins are usually dark with pale edging, giving the fish a crisp, high-contrast appearance. Like other Synodontis, they have long sensory barbels, strong pectoral spines and an armoured, slightly upside-down-capable catfish body shape.
Adults usually reach around 10–12 cm in aquariums, although fish sold under this name may vary depending on whether they are true S. petricola or the similar S. lucipinnis. Their compact size makes them more manageable than many larger Synodontis species, but they still need proper floor space and hiding areas.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is best suited to Lake Tanganyika community aquariums, hard-water rocky displays and larger peaceful community tanks with compatible water chemistry. It is a good choice for aquarists wanting an active, attractive bottom-dweller for alkaline conditions.
Petricola Catfish are not suitable for soft acidic blackwater aquariums, tiny tanks, immature aquariums, delicate nano communities or aquariums with very small fish that may be eaten. They are also not a substitute for general aquarium cleaning and must be properly fed.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 120 litres for a small group, with a tank length of at least 90 cm recommended. Larger aquariums of 150–200 litres or more are preferred for Tanganyikan cichlid communities or bigger groups.
Keep in a group of at least 3, with 5 or more preferred where space allows. Group keeping improves confidence, activity and natural interaction.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH: 7.8–9.0
Hardness: Moderately hard to hard
Additional Notes: Stable alkaline water is important. Maintain excellent filtration, strong biological capacity, good oxygenation and regular water changes. Avoid soft acidic conditions, sudden pH swings and poor nitrate control. This species is especially suited to Tanganyikan-style hard-water aquariums.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Petricola Catfish are generally peaceful with suitable tank mates, but they may eat very small fish or fry if given the opportunity. Suitable companions include peaceful to moderately assertive Tanganyikan cichlids, shell dwellers with care, Julidochromis, Altolamprologus, rainbowfish in compatible hard water, larger livebearers in compatible setups, bristlenose plecs in suitable conditions and robust community fish too large to be swallowed.
Avoid tiny tetras, small fry, delicate nano fish, very soft-water species, aggressive large cichlids that may attack them and rough bottom dwellers that compete for hiding places. Provide multiple caves and rock crevices so each catfish can retreat without conflict.
Feeding:
Petricola Catfish are easy-feeding omnivores with a strong appetite. Offer quality sinking catfish pellets, carnivore tablets, algae wafers and small sinking granules as the staple diet. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brineshrimp, mysis, daphnia, chopped prawn, mosquito larvae and small pieces of meaty food.
Include some vegetable or algae-based foods for balance. Feed after lights dim if they are shy, and make sure food reaches the bottom in busy cichlid communities.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This species is often shy when first introduced, spending time among rocks and caves. Once settled, Petricola Catfish become more confident and may be seen foraging during the day, especially in groups. They are active, inquisitive catfish and often move through caves, rockwork and open feeding areas.
They may rest under ledges, squeeze into narrow crevices or feed at unusual angles, which is normal Synodontis behaviour. Group members may chase, display or interact around caves and feeding spots, but serious aggression is uncommon when space and hiding places are sufficient.
Care Notes:
Add Petricola Catfish only to a mature, fully cycled aquarium. Provide rockwork, caves and stable hard-water conditions. Use smooth rocks and secure décor carefully so structures cannot collapse if the fish dig or squeeze underneath. Maintain good oxygenation and regular water changes, as Synodontis are hearty feeders and can add to the waste load.
Handle with care, as the pectoral and dorsal spines can catch in nets. A container is often safer than a fine mesh net when moving these fish.
Recommended For:
Beginner to intermediate in hard-water aquariums
