Pitbull Pleco LDA25 – Parotocinclus jumbo
The Pitbull Pleco LDA25 is a small, peaceful loricariid catfish with a broad head, compact body and unusual “pitbull” face shape. Also sold as the Pitbull Plec, LDA025 Pitbull Pleco, Pitbull Otocinclus or LDA25 Parotocinclus, this sociable bottom-dweller is best suited to mature aquariums with soft sand, smooth stones, driftwood and calm community fish. It is a useful algae and biofilm grazer, but it still needs proper feeding and should not be treated as a complete aquarium cleaner.

Natural Range & Habitat:
Parotocinclus jumbo is a South American loricariid catfish from Brazil. Wild fish are associated with shallow, clear waters with low current, sandy and rocky bottoms, and grazing surfaces where they can feed on biofilm, algae and tiny organisms.
In the aquarium, Pitbull Plecos should be given a mature, natural-style setup with fine sand, smooth stones, driftwood, plants and shaded areas. Unlike many small sucker-mouth catfish, they spend a lot of time on or close to the substrate and may bury slightly into soft sand when startled.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Pitbull Plecos have a compact armoured body, sucker-type mouth and distinctive broad head that gives them their common name. Colour is usually grey, olive, tan or brown with darker mottling, spotting or saddle-like markings that help them blend into sand, stones and wood.
Adults usually reach around 5–7 cm. Males may show stronger colour contrast and subtle blue-green or metallic tones when mature, while females are often rounder-bodied. Pattern and intensity can vary between individuals.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is well suited to mature planted aquariums, peaceful community tanks and specialist small catfish displays. It appreciates clean water, stable conditions, soft substrate and natural grazing surfaces.
Pitbull Plecos are not suitable for brand-new aquariums with no biofilm or for tanks with sharp gravel. They are good grazers, but they still require regular feeding with suitable sinking foods. They are generally plant-safe and can be a good choice for aquascapes when kept in appropriate numbers.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 80–100 litres for a group, with a tank length of at least 75–80 cm recommended. Larger aquariums are better for bigger groups and mixed peaceful communities.
Keep in a group of at least 5, with 6 or more preferred where space allows. This is a sociable species and usually behaves more confidently when kept with others of its own kind.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Additional Notes: Clean, stable and well-oxygenated water is important. Provide fine sand, smooth stones, driftwood and mature grazing surfaces. Avoid sharp gravel, dirty substrate, unstable new aquariums, poor oxygenation and aggressive water movement.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Pitbull Plecos are peaceful and suitable for calm community aquariums. Suitable tank mates include small to medium tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, peaceful barbs, small rainbowfish, cory-type catfish, dwarf cichlids, Otocinclus and other gentle community fish.
Avoid large predators, aggressive cichlids, boisterous bottom-dwellers and fish that may outcompete them at feeding time. They are generally tolerant of each other and are best maintained as a group rather than singly.
Feeding:
Pitbull Plecos are omnivorous grazers with a strong preference for algae, biofilm and plant-based foods. Offer algae wafers, spirulina tablets, vegetable-based sinking foods and fine catfish pellets as the staple diet.
Supplement with blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach or other suitable vegetables. Occasional protein foods such as daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm or brineshrimp can be offered in small amounts. They may graze algae from the aquarium, but they must not be expected to survive on algae alone.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This species spends much of its time on the lower levels of the aquarium, resting on sand, smooth stones, wood or plant leaves. It is less of a glass-hanging fish than many Otocinclus and often behaves more like a small substrate-grazing pleco.
Pitbull Plecos are quiet, peaceful and social. In a settled group, they may forage together across the substrate and hardscape. When startled, they may press down into the sand or hide under décor, so soft substrate and shaded cover are important.
Care Notes:
Add Pitbull Plecos only to a mature, stable aquarium with established biofilm and peaceful tank mates. Provide soft sand, smooth hardscape, driftwood, plants and shaded areas.
Make sure food reaches the bottom, especially in busy community tanks. Do not rely on algae alone, and avoid keeping them in very clean, newly set-up tanks with no natural grazing. Regular water changes, good oxygenation and low waste levels are important for long-term health.
