Redwag Hifin Platy – Xiphophorus maculatus
The Redwag Hifin Platy is a bright captive-bred livebearer selected for a red to orange-red body, dark wagtail-style fins and a tall high dorsal fin. As an ornamental strain of Xiphophorus maculatus, it is peaceful, active and well suited to mature community aquariums with stable, mineral-rich water. The hifin dorsal gives this variety extra display appeal, but it should be kept with calm, fin-safe tank mates that will not nip or damage the enlarged fin.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Redwag Hifin Platy
Other Names: Red Wag Hifin Platy, Red Wagtail Highfin Platy, Red Hifin Platy, Red Wag Platy, Fancy Platy, Southern Platyfish
Scientific Name: Xiphophorus maculatus
Fish Type: Livebearer / Platy
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Wild Xiphophorus maculatus is native to Central America, from Mexico through to Belize and nearby regions. Natural habitats include warm springs, canals, ditches, creeks and swamps, usually with slow-moving water, silty bottoms and weedy banks.
The Redwag Hifin Platy is a captive-bred aquarium strain, so its red colour, dark fins and high dorsal fin are selectively bred traits rather than wild-type features. Aquarium care should still reflect the species’ preference for warm, stable, well-mineralised water with plant cover and open swimming space.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Redwag Hifin Platies usually show a red, orange-red or coral body with contrasting dark fins and wagtail-style markings. The hifin form has a taller, more decorative dorsal fin than the standard platy, giving the fish a more showy outline. Individual fish may vary in red intensity, fin height, black coverage and body shape.
Adults usually reach around 4–6 cm, with females often larger and deeper-bodied than males. Males are slimmer and have a gonopodium, while females are rounder and may become noticeably fuller when carrying fry.
Aquarium Suitability:
Redwag Hifin Platies are well suited to peaceful community aquariums, planted livebearer displays and beginner-friendly tropical setups. They do best in mature aquariums with stable water quality, gentle to moderate flow, plant cover and plenty of open swimming room.
They are not suitable for soft acidic blackwater aquariums, aggressive cichlid tanks, predator communities, severe fin-nipping setups or unheated aquariums that drop too cold. Because this is a hifin strain, rough tank mates and sharp décor should be avoided.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 60 litres for a small group, with a tank length of at least 60 cm recommended. Larger aquariums of 75–100 litres or more are better for mixed groups, community tanks and fry management.
Platies are social fish and should be kept in groups rather than singly. For mixed-sex groups, keep more females than males to reduce persistent male attention, with a ratio of around two or more females per male where possible.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 20–25°C
pH: 7.0–8.0
Hardness: Moderately hard to hard
Additional Notes: Platies need mineral-rich water and should not be kept long term in very soft, acidic conditions. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and maintain low nitrate with regular water changes. Stable hard, alkaline water is preferred, and sudden swings in temperature, pH or hardness should be avoided.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Redwag Hifin Platies are peaceful, active community fish. Suitable tank mates include guppies, Endler’s livebearers, swordtails, mollies in compatible water, peaceful tetras that tolerate harder water, rasboras, danios, Cory-type catfish, bristlenose plecs and other calm community species.
Avoid large predators, aggressive cichlids, Tiger Barbs, Serpae Tetras in small groups and other fin-nipping species that may damage the high dorsal fin. Very soft-water specialist fish are also poor matches if the aquarium is being maintained for livebearer conditions. Keep in groups, with sensible male-to-female ratios if males and females are mixed.
Feeding:
Redwag Hifin Platies are easy-feeding omnivores. Offer quality flakes, small granules or micro pellets as the staple diet. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops and mosquito larvae. Include vegetable matter such as spirulina flakes, algae-based foods or blanched greens to support digestion and colour.
Feed small amounts that are eaten quickly. Platies are eager feeders and can become overweight if overfed.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This is an active, visible livebearer that usually swims through the middle and upper areas of the aquarium. Redwag Hifin Platies browse on fine algae, biofilm and small food particles between feeds, but they should not be relied on as clean-up fish. Males may display to females and chase occasionally, which is normal, but persistent harassment is reduced by keeping a sensible group ratio.
Like other livebearers, females give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. In a planted aquarium, some fry may survive among moss, floating plants and dense cover.
Care Notes:
Add only to a mature, fully cycled aquarium. Maintain hard, alkaline water, avoid sudden temperature changes and carry out regular partial water changes. Provide plants and cover, but leave open swimming room. Because this is a hifin strain, avoid nippy tank mates and sharp decorations that could tear the dorsal fin.
Mixed-sex groups can breed regularly, so plan ahead for fry or choose single-sex groups where available. Quarantine new livebearers where possible, as fancy strains can be sensitive after transport.
