Scarlet Badis – Dario dario
The Scarlet Badis is a tiny, jewel-like freshwater fish best known for the intense red striping and blue highlights shown by mature males. Although small enough for nano aquariums, Dario dario is not a basic beginner community fish. It is a shy micro-predator that needs a mature, well-planted aquarium, peaceful surroundings and regular access to very small frozen or live foods.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Scarlet Badis
Other Names: Scarlet Gem Badis, Scarlet Dario, Bengal Badis, Red Badis, Badis dario
Scientific Name: Dario dario
Fish Type: Badid / Micro-predatory Nano Fish
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Dario dario is native to India, where it is found in shallow, clear, heavily vegetated freshwater streams. These habitats often contain sand, fine gravel, dense aquatic plants and calm marginal areas where tiny prey can be hunted among cover.
In the aquarium, Scarlet Badis should be provided with a mature planted setup containing mosses, fine-leaved plants, leaf litter, wood, small caves and shaded areas. Gentle filtration is best, with enough oxygenation but no harsh current. A well-established aquarium with natural microfauna is especially helpful.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Male Scarlet Badis are brightly coloured, usually showing scarlet-red vertical barring with blue, turquoise or pale reflective highlights on the body and fins. Females are much plainer, usually beige, grey or lightly patterned, and are less commonly available in the trade. Males often have stronger fin extensions and much brighter display colour.
Adults are extremely small, usually around 1.5–2 cm. Their tiny size means they can be overlooked, intimidated or easily outcompeted in busy aquariums.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is best suited to mature nano aquariums, species-only setups or carefully planned peaceful micro communities. Scarlet Badis thrive in dense planting with quiet areas, broken lines of sight and plenty of cover. They are ideal for aquarists who enjoy subtle natural behaviour, territorial displays and tiny specialist fish.
They are not suitable for new aquariums, boisterous community tanks, predator setups, large active fish, rough tank mates or aquariums where only standard dry food is offered.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 30–45 litres for a single male or carefully managed small group, with 45–60 litres or more preferred for multiple males, females or selected tank mates. Floor space, plant density and territory breaks matter more than height.
Males can be territorial with one another, so more than one male should only be kept where there is enough cover and separate visual territories. A male with females can work well where females are available, but trade groups are often male-heavy.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 20–26°C
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Additional Notes: Keep water clean, stable and gently filtered. Scarlet Badis dislike strong current, but still need good oxygenation and regular maintenance. Avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry. A mature planted aquarium is strongly recommended before purchase.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Scarlet Badis are peaceful towards suitable tank mates, but males can be territorial with each other. They are shy, tiny and slow to feed, so they are easily stressed or outcompeted by active fish. Best companions are very small, calm species such as tiny rasboras, small peaceful tetras, pygmy Cory-type catfish in suitable setups, peaceful snails and adult dwarf shrimp with caution.
Avoid large fish, aggressive cichlids, fin-nippers, active barbs, pushy livebearers, large gouramis and fast-feeding community fish. Adult dwarf shrimp may be ignored, but shrimplets may be eaten. For best results, keep as a species-focused nano display or with only very calm micro fish.
Feeding:
Scarlet Badis are micro-predators and can be fussy feeders. Offer very small live and frozen foods such as baby brineshrimp, daphnia, cyclops, microworms, grindal worms, small mosquito larvae and finely chopped bloodworm. Some individuals may learn to take high-quality micro pellets or prepared frozen foods, but dry foods should not be relied on as the only diet.
Feed carefully and make sure each fish gets food. In community aquariums, faster tank mates may eat everything before the Scarlet Badis has a chance to feed.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This species spends much of its time among plants, moss and cover, watching for tiny prey and moving in short, deliberate bursts. Males may claim small territories and display with intensified red colour, flared fins and sideways posturing. In a well-planted aquarium, their behaviour is fascinating but subtle.
Scarlet Badis are egg scatterers that may spawn among mosses, fine plants or dense cover. Adults do not provide parental care, and eggs or fry may be eaten unless protected.
Care Notes:
Add Scarlet Badis only to a mature, stable aquarium with plenty of cover and a reliable supply of suitable small foods. Avoid bare tanks, strong current, rough tank mates and over-bright, exposed layouts. Their tiny size makes them vulnerable during transport and acclimation, so introduce them carefully.
This species should be sold as a specialist nano micro-predator rather than a general community fish. Customers should be prepared to feed small frozen or live foods regularly.
