Snow White Longfin Bristlenose – Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus

The Snow White Longfin Bristlenose is a striking captive-bred bristlenose catfish with a pale white to creamy body, flowing long fins and the classic sucker-mouth shape of an Ancistrus pleco. Also sold as the Snow White Bristlenose Pleco, Longfin Snow White Bristlenose, White Longfin Bristlenose Catfish or Snow White Pleco, this peaceful loricariid is well suited to mature planted community aquariums with driftwood, caves and stable water quality. It is useful for grazing algae and biofilm, but it still needs proper feeding and regular aquarium maintenance.

Natural Range & Habitat:

The Snow White Longfin Bristlenose is a captive-bred ornamental strain rather than a wild locality form. It is usually sold under the common bristlenose group, with Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus often used in the trade for aquarium-bred bristlenose lines.

Wild-type Ancistrus bristlenose catfish are South American loricariids associated with rivers, streams and tributaries containing submerged wood, stones, roots, grazing surfaces and shaded cover. In the aquarium, this strain should be provided with driftwood, caves, smooth stones, plants and shaded areas where it can graze and rest naturally.

Appearance & Adult Size:

Snow White Longfin Bristlenose have a flattened body, broad head, sucker-type mouth and armoured plates typical of bristlenose catfish. The Snow White form is pale white, cream or very light ivory, with reduced darker pigment and a clean bright appearance under aquarium lighting.

The longfin form has extended flowing fins, giving the fish a more elegant look than standard shortfin bristlenose. Mature males usually develop more obvious bristles on the snout and face, while females may have fewer, shorter or less developed bristles. Adults usually reach around 10–12 cm, with the long fins adding extra visual size.

Aquarium Suitability:

This species is well suited to mature planted aquariums, peaceful community tanks and natural-style setups with driftwood, caves and shaded resting areas. It spends much of its time grazing on wood, glass, stones, plant leaves and décor.

Snow White Longfin Bristlenose are not suitable for tiny aquariums or brand-new setups with no natural biofilm. They are good algae grazers, but they will not clean the aquarium on their own and must be fed a balanced diet. The long fins also need protection from fin-nipping fish and sharp décor.

Recommended Aquarium Size:

A practical minimum is 80–100 litres for a single adult, with a tank length of at least 60–75 cm recommended. Larger aquariums are better for mixed communities or if keeping more than one bristlenose.

Keep one male per small to medium aquarium, as adult males can become territorial over caves. Pairs or groups are best kept only in larger tanks with multiple caves, feeding areas and visual barriers.

Snow White Longfin Bristlenose are generally peaceful with most community fish, but adult males can be territorial with other bristlenose or similar cave-dwelling plecos. Suitable tank mates include tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, livebearers in suitable water, rainbowfish, cory-type catfish, dwarf cichlids and other calm community species.

Avoid large aggressive cichlids, predatory fish, fin-nippers and very boisterous tank mates that may damage the long fins. Also avoid highly competitive bottom dwellers that may prevent the bristlenose from feeding properly. Do not keep multiple males together in a small aquarium.

Feeding:

Bristlenose catfish are mainly herbivorous to omnivorous grazers. Offer algae wafers, spirulina tablets, vegetable-based sinking foods and quality pleco pellets as the staple diet.

Supplement with blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach, kale, shelled peas or other suitable vegetables. Occasional protein foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, brineshrimp or sinking carnivore foods can be offered, but the diet should remain mostly vegetable-based. Remove uneaten vegetables before they spoil the water.

Behaviour in the Aquarium:

This is a bottom and surface-grazing catfish that spends much of its time attached to wood, glass, rocks or plant leaves. It may be more active in the evening, although settled individuals often become visible during the day, especially at feeding time.

Males may claim caves and defend them from other bristlenose. Breeding can occur in mature aquariums, with the male guarding eggs inside a cave or hollow until the fry hatch and become free-swimming.

Care Notes:

Provide driftwood, caves and a mature aquarium with stable water quality. Wood is strongly recommended, as bristlenose catfish graze on wood surfaces and biofilm as part of their natural behaviour.

Do not rely on this fish to survive on algae alone. Feed vegetable-based foods regularly and keep the substrate clean, as plecos produce a noticeable amount of waste. Protect the long fins from fin-nipping fish, sharp décor and strong turbulent flow. The pale Snow White colour can show marks or fin damage more clearly than darker strains, so excellent water quality is important.
