Sunshine Bristlenose – Ancistrus temminckii
The Sunshine Bristlenose is an attractive bristlenose catfish valued for its manageable adult size, peaceful temperament and useful grazing behaviour. Also sold as the Sunshine Bristlenose Pleco, Temminck’s Bristlenose, Bushynose Pleco or Bristlenose Catfish, this bottom-dwelling loricariid is well suited to mature planted community aquariums with driftwood, caves, good filtration and stable water quality. It will graze algae and biofilm, but it still needs a proper vegetable-based diet and should not be treated as a complete aquarium cleaner.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Sunshine Bristlenose
Other Names: Sunshine Bristlenose Pleco, Temminck’s Bristlenose, Bushynose Pleco, Bristlenose Catfish
Scientific Name: Ancistrus temminckii
Older / Trade Name: Ancistrus sp., Bristlenose Pleco
Fish Type: Bristlenose Pleco / Loricariid Catfish
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Ancistrus temminckii is recorded from South America, including the Saramacca, Suriname and Maroni River basins. Bristlenose-type catfish are typically associated with freshwater rivers, tributaries and streams where submerged wood, stones, roots and shaded areas provide shelter and grazing surfaces.
In the aquarium, Sunshine Bristlenose should be provided with a mature setup containing driftwood, caves, smooth rocks and stable water conditions. Wood and hard surfaces encourage natural grazing behaviour, while caves and shaded retreats help the fish feel secure.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Sunshine Bristlenose have a flattened body, broad head, sucker-type mouth and armoured body plates typical of Ancistrus catfish. Depending on the exact trade form, colour may range from yellow, golden or tan through to darker brown or black with pale spotting or high-contrast markings.
Mature males usually develop more obvious bristles across the snout and face, while females may have fewer, shorter bristles around the mouth edge. Adults usually reach around 10–12 cm, making them smaller and more manageable than many common pleco-type catfish.
Aquarium Suitability:
This species is well suited to mature planted aquariums, peaceful community tanks and natural-style setups with wood, caves and shaded areas. It spends much of its time grazing surfaces and resting under cover, becoming more active in the evening or at feeding time.
Sunshine Bristlenose are useful algae grazers, but they are not a substitute for aquarium maintenance. They should not be added to brand-new tanks with no biofilm, and they need regular feeding with proper sinking and vegetable-based foods.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 80–100 litres for a single adult, with a tank length of at least 60–75 cm recommended. Larger aquariums are better for mixed communities or if keeping more than one bristlenose.
Keep one male per small to medium aquarium, as adult males can become territorial over caves. Pairs or groups are best kept only in larger tanks with multiple caves, feeding areas and visual barriers.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 21–26°C
pH: 6.5–7.8
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Additional Notes: Keep water clean, stable and well oxygenated. Provide good filtration, regular water changes and plenty of wood or hard surfaces for grazing. Avoid poor water quality, unstable new aquariums and low-oxygen conditions.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Sunshine Bristlenose are peaceful with most community fish, but adult males can be territorial with other bristlenose or similar cave-dwelling plecos. Suitable tank mates include tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, livebearers in suitable water, rainbowfish, cory-type catfish, dwarf cichlids and other calm community species.
Avoid large aggressive cichlids, predatory fish, fin-nippers that may harass resting catfish and very competitive bottom dwellers that may prevent them from feeding. Do not keep multiple males together in a small aquarium.
Feeding:
Sunshine Bristlenose are mainly herbivorous to omnivorous grazers. Offer algae wafers, spirulina tablets, vegetable-based sinking foods and quality pleco pellets as the staple diet.
Supplement with blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach, kale, shelled peas or other suitable vegetables. Occasional protein foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, brineshrimp or sinking carnivore foods can be offered, but the diet should remain mostly vegetable-based. Remove uneaten vegetables before they spoil the water.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This is a bottom and surface-grazing catfish that spends much of its time attached to wood, glass, rocks, caves or plant leaves. It may be secretive when first introduced, but settled individuals often become visible at feeding time.
Males may claim caves and defend them from other bristlenose. Breeding can occur in mature aquariums, with the male guarding eggs inside a cave or hollow until the fry hatch and become free-swimming.
Care Notes:
Provide driftwood, caves and a mature aquarium with stable water quality. Wood is strongly recommended, as bristlenose catfish graze on wood surfaces and biofilm as part of their natural behaviour.
Do not rely on this fish to survive on algae alone. Feed vegetable-based foods regularly and keep the substrate clean, as bristlenose catfish produce a noticeable amount of waste. Protect them from aggressive tank mates and avoid overcrowding the bottom of the aquarium with too many territorial catfish.
