Wapoga Rainbowfish – Chilatherina alleni “Wapoga”
Overview:
The Wapoga Rainbowfish is a rare and highly attractive New Guinea rainbowfish, valued for its lively shoaling behaviour, elegant body shape and mature male colour. This locality form of Chilatherina alleni is often sold as Allen’s Rainbowfish or Alleni Wapoga Rainbowfish, and large specimens can already show impressive colour and confident display behaviour. It is a peaceful but energetic species best kept in a spacious planted aquarium with clean water, open swimming room and a proper group.
Key Identification:
Common Name: Wapoga Rainbowfish
Other Names: Allen’s Rainbowfish, Alleni Rainbowfish, Alleni Wapoga Rainbowfish, Wapoga Alleni Rainbowfish
Scientific Name: Chilatherina alleni “Wapoga”
Fish Type: Rainbowfish
Water Type: Freshwater
Natural Range & Habitat:
Chilatherina alleni is native to West Papua, New Guinea. The species was described from specimens collected from a tributary of the Aiborei River in the Siriwo catchment, while the popular aquarium “Wapoga” strain is associated with the Wapoga River region. Aquarium Glaser notes that hobby stock probably originates from a 2008 Wapoga River collection.
In the wild, Wapoga-type rainbowfish occur in rainforest streams and river tributaries. Care sources describe habitats ranging from lowland creeks to mountain streams, with sand or gravel substrates, leaf litter, log debris, submerged branches and clear to slightly stained water.
Appearance & Adult Size:
Large Wapoga Rainbowfish can be very colourful, especially males. Body colour can vary between individuals, with blue, turquoise, yellow, orange, reddish and bronze tones depending on age, sex, mood and strain line. Specialist rainbowfish references note that Wapoga forms can vary noticeably, with some fish showing stronger red to yellow colour and others appearing more bluish.
Adults usually reach around 9–12 cm. Aquarium Glaser gives a maximum length of around 9 cm, while some aquarium trade sources list Alleni Rainbowfish at around 10–12.7 cm. Males are generally more colourful and display more strongly, while females are usually slimmer and more understated.
Aquarium Suitability:
This is a good choice for a larger planted community aquarium, New Guinea-style display or mixed rainbowfish setup. Wapoga Rainbowfish need open swimming space, stable water quality and a group of their own kind. Planting around the back and sides works well, but the centre of the tank should be left open for active swimming.
They are peaceful, but they are fast and lively, so they are not ideal for very small aquariums, shy nano fish or slow feeders that may be intimidated at feeding time.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A practical minimum is 180 litres for a group, with a tank length of at least 100–120 cm recommended. Larger aquariums are preferred for large specimens, mixed rainbowfish groups or strong male display behaviour.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard; avoid unstable extremes
Additional Notes: Provide clean, well-oxygenated water with regular partial water changes. Interaquaristik lists Wapoga Rainbowfish care at 24–28°C, pH around 6.5–7.5, and soft to medium-hard water. Moderate flow is suitable, but avoid forcing the fish to constantly fight strong current.
Temperament & Tank Mates:
Aquarium Category: Community Fish
Wapoga Rainbowfish are peaceful, active shoaling fish. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful rainbowfish, larger tetras, danios, rasboras, peaceful barbs, Cory-type catfish, bristlenose plecs, small to medium peaceful loaches and calm community cichlids in compatible water.
Avoid aggressive cichlids, persistent fin-nippers, very tiny fish and slow, timid species that may struggle to compete at feeding time. Keep in a group of at least 6, with 8 or more preferred. A mixed-sex group is best, as males usually show stronger colour and more natural display behaviour when females and rival males are present.
Feeding:
Wapoga Rainbowfish are easy-feeding omnivores. Offer quality flakes, small granules and rainbowfish pellets as the staple diet. Supplement regularly with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, mosquito larvae and bloodworm. Include some vegetable or algae-based foods for balance. They are fast feeders, so feed measured portions and make sure quieter tank mates are not outcompeted.
Behaviour in the Aquarium:
This species spends most of its time in the middle and upper levels, swimming in a loose group. Males may display with raised fins, stronger body colour and brief sparring movements, especially in the morning or after water changes. They are active rather than aggressive, and their colour usually improves with age, confidence and good group structure.
Care Notes:
Keep in a mature aquarium with stable water, good filtration and a secure lid, as rainbowfish can jump when startled. Do not keep singly or in pairs, as small numbers can become nervous and less colourful. Locality strains such as Wapoga should not be mixed with other Chilatherina alleni strains if breeding may occur, as this can lose the locality identity. Large specimens should be given swimming space immediately rather than being treated as small community fish.
